1. Barber Schooling Requirements

Sure, salon owners in many states will require you to show your permit before hiring. To obtain a barbering certificate (BAR) in HI, first, you must graduate from at least 1500 hours of coaching school. The requirements are stricter compared to Florida. There, passing 1000-hour training is enough. Attending the HI Board accredited curriculum you learn all the nuances of hair care. This is the minimum that you should master after the course:

• shampooing
• conditioning
• hair cutting
• coloring
• shaving
• disinfecting methods
• sanitation
• highlighting
• permanent waving
• running your business, etc.

Hereby you will get acquainted with basic aspects of your profession. Yet, to keep being on the cutting edge of fashion and hairstyling techniques, it would be better to take advanced lessons.

2. Application

Undoubtedly, this is your next step after education. You can be eligible for application in case you are:

• 17 years old or above
• citizen of the US

To take part in the exam, you need to submit your request to the HI Board and get approval. For that, simply follow these steps.

Take your education transcripts

You may ask your school to direct them to the Board or you should transfer them on your own. This document is a formal proof that you have fulfilled the demanded courses. It has to reflect the subjects and hours of your school.

Pay a fee

Finally, you need to make your check payable to the Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs. The fee is $20.

To this end, file all in the package and send it to the DCCA by mail or in person.

3. Examination

You can start planning your exam when you get an “approval notification” from ISO Quality testing via email. It might take only one week. Then, you are to schedule your final test or attempt through the Prometric exam vendor.

• Oahu

• Kauai

The questionnaire consists of 110 questions. You have two and half hours to answer them. The test is computer-based and written.

The results will be ready within 2 weeks. If you succeed, you will receive final instructions on how to acquire your Hawaii BAR license.

Temporary Paper

CAA has an excellent offer for those who are eager to work before being a licensee. Temporary certificate holders may work only under the supervision of a qualified master. The paper is valid for a year and issued once. So, it is impossible to extend it. To earn it, you need to attach an additional fee of $37 along with your request.

How to Renew

This should occur biannually. Renewal examination includes both theoretical and practical parts. Continuing education is not a mandatory condition. Regardless of the issue date, all permits expire on December 31 of each odd-numbered year.

Nearly two months prior to the expiration date you will receive a notice at your mail address. For active status, you must pay $146. For an inactive one, it costs $12.

Transferability

Note that Hawaii does not accept reciprocity from other states. So, you have to obtain a new permit by submitting an out-of-state application. For that, you must include supporting documents like:
